TRN 100 G - Trans to American Culture - Pam Parris Grd:
A
__________________________________________________________
Transition to American
Culture (TAC) presents an opportunity
for
new international students to improve their spoken and written
English by increasing their
vocabularies, analyzing literature,
writing papers, and
participating at the Harkness Table in the
company
of other non-native speakers with the same issues of
academic and cultural
adjustment.
We accomplished these goals
through a wide variety of
activities in the classroom. We
also prepared an international
dinner at the term's end for
ourselves and our guests.
I very much enjoyed working with
this small, diverse group,
and Fon Wiruchnipawan was an
important part of it. Her English
is excellent in every respect,
and she will surely find success in
all her PEA courses. Her
vocabulary is well developed and she
has a sincere and lively
interest in all she encounters, especially
new and unusual words! She has
done very well on our vocabulary
quizzes and short paragraphs.
Her longer papers have also been
done with care and skill, and I
believe she has progressed in her
writing in ways that she can
apply in future courses. Fon even
completes some assignments
early, a testimony to her eagerness
and time management skills. Her
ability to analyze literature and
express her ideas succinctly is
commendable and enables her
to write forcefully on any
subject. I always liked reading
Fon's papers. She will be an
asset to any class because she
is willing to participate in a
way that helps the class move along.
She relishes the chance
to learn through group discussion.
It has been a pleasure to know
Fon, and I would welcome any
chance to continue working with
her. We have all benefited, in this
international circle, from her
presence. Enjoy your vacation, Fon!

ENG 410 C2 -12th-Grade English *- Duncan Holcolmb Grd:
A-
___________________________________________________________
There is no one in my senior
English classes who has worked
harder than Fon. She has done
multiple drafts of every essay,
usually coming to see me and
talk before each new draft. She is
always well prepared for class,
very attentive and participatory,
and asks questions when she's
unclear about something.
I was concerned how well
she would handle a difficult text
like "Hamlet," but she jumped
right in, and was not afraid to
ask for help with difficulties.
Her first short piece on the play
made three or four
interesting and plausible points, and did so
clearly and succinctly. Fon did struggle more with her
longer
essay on the image of
Hyperion in "Hamlet." She made a
number of creative arguments
there too, but they were not as
clearly explained as they could
be. Perhaps Fon should limit
the number of ideas she wants to
expostulate, and explain the
ones she wants to keep in
greater depth. The ideas she did
explain fully were quite
excellent.
Fon's best
work this term came on her persuasive essay,
a piece arguing for the
inevitability of selfishness. That essay
offered a great variety of
interesting examples, all of which
were fully explained, with
plenty of detail. It was quite a
persuasive and entertaining piece --
I had someone read it
to the whole class. She earned an
A- on that, and she still
re-wrote it! And I was moved by
her story about her grandpa.
Her sentence structure there was
awkward in places, but
the story itself was full of
interesting detail.
This is a young woman with the
drive and the intellect to
go far. I look forward to
seeing her continued progress.

MAT 431
H -Calculus (enriched) *- Joseph R. Wolfson Grd:
A
__________________________________________________________
Fon did an excellent job
all term in this accelerated section of
Math 431. She entered the course
with a stronger background than
her classmates, having already
studied calculus in Thailand, and
she exhibited her expertise on a
regular basis. Her work was, at
all times, thorough and
rigorous. She understood the mathematical
theory and she was reliable
about carrying out the requisite
calculations.
Unlike others in the class, Fon
learned mathematics without
access to a calculator, and
consequently her algebra skills are
superb. Her in-class
presentations were detailed, even if her
spoken English wasn't always as
fluent as she would have liked
it to be. On occasion, Fon saw
things from a different perspective,
and she always made sure to
speak her piece, to state her position.
Sometimes her perspective was
the correct one, sometimes not,
but in any case she always spoke
her mind.
I was not always happy with
everyone's efforts in this class,
but that was never the case with
Fon; she did her work completely.
She is a good mathematician, an
eager and reliable student,
and an independent thinker. She
added a great deal to our class.

CHE
410 AT - AP Chemistry * - Sharon
Finley Grd: A
______________________________________________________
I have been delighted to have
Fon in my AP Chemistry class
this term. She is full of
energy and high spirits, has a great
sense
of humor, and oh yes, she is very very intelligent and
capable. What a good
student!
Fon brings so much of her
personality and her pleasure in
learning to class each day, I
think I can safely say that she has
done more than any of
the rest of us to keep our 8 a.m. class
lively and entertaining. Fon has a remarkable memory
and the
ability to apply what
she has learned in earlier science classes
to her work in AP
Chemistry.
For a while I feared that
we might have nothing new to offer
her in our AP class, but
as the term has moved along, we are
starting to work on
topics that she has not tackled before.
I have finally been
given an opportunity to see how Fon learns
new material, and she
is equally impressive in that regard.
She is fearless in
trying out ideas, and is willing to check her
understanding before
she is sure that she has everything just
right.
On occasion, she has found that she was not yet clear in
organizing
and explicating new ideas, but she corrects herself
easily
and well, and then marches on.
Have a well-deserved winter
break, Fon.

MAT
441 H -AP Calculus (enriched) *- Richard L. Parris Grd:
A
___________________________________________________________
This course dealt with a
variety of topics, including applications of
integration (length of arc, volumes by cross-section and shells, and
centroids as an averaging process), anti-differentiation techniques
(variable
substitution, parts, and partial fractions), Maclaurin series,
l'Hopital's Rule for indeterminate forms, Newton's Method of solving
equations, separable differential equations (for logistic growth),
polar coordinates, improper integrals, the radius of curvature of a
cycloid, an explicit equation for the tractrix, and more. Several of
these topics might appear on the BC Calculus exam this spring.
As the grade indicates, Fon did an outstanding job of coping with
all this advanced material.
Conscientious about homework, she did
her share when it came
to the daily review of homework. Her presentations were
effective
(remarkable since she is working in a second language), and
she
was one of the three or four students who could be counted on
to
tackle the hard problems. Fon made good use of class time,
and
learned from what few mistakes she made. She has made
excellent
progress this term, and can confidently approach the work of
Math 451 in the spring I have very much enjoyed the
opportunity to
work with Fon this winter, and would welcome another opportunity.

CHE
420 DW - AP Chemistry * - Sharon Finley Grd:

_________________________________________________________
This is Fon's second term in my
AP Chemistry class and she
continues to be an outstanding student as well as an
outstanding
young woman. In the lab, around the table in the classroom,
and
just in informal conversations - Fon is so intelligent and at
the same
time
so cheerful and good-hearted that it is pure pleasure to be
her teacher.
This term Fon worked very well with a new partner in the
lab.
I have seen Fon's practical skills improve rapidly in laboratory work,
until she now is functioning as well in the
lab as she always has in
doing her written, problem-solving work.
Fon continues to amaze me with her ability to put ideas together
from past years and from earlier in this same
course. She has a rare
capability for synthesizing and organizing
what she learns into logical
and clear systems of ideas.
Washington, D.C. is her vacation spot this term. I'm a
bit envious.
See you in the spring, Fon. Have a great vacation.

ECO
430 C - Macroeconomics * - Thomas Giblin Grd:
A
_________________________________________________________
In this course, we covered the material that would be covered
in a first year college level macroeconomics course. By
coincidence
rather than design it also overlaps in the theory component
with
the AP Macroeconomics exam. We covered both theory and
contemporary applications of the theory relating to, supply
and
demand, unemployment and the labor market, GDP as a measure,
how
inflation is measured, the monetary system, the determinants
of long run growth, the supply of savings both domestic and
international, monetary policy and fiscal policy, and the globalization
of financial capital flows and exchange-rate crises.
Fon has been one of the outstanding students in all three sections
of my Econ 430 course, with the second highest grade overall out of
all three groups. She has worked extremely
hard and mastered the
fundamentals of macroeconomics thoroughly.
Her performance in
tests has been exemplary with either A or A- grades. Most of her
written work has also been of the highest standard, though her final
essay probably needed a bit
tighter a focus.
Fon has been a leading contributor at the Harkness table,
frequently offering answers to questions and clarifying
issues
for others. She has strong analytical abilities.
It has been a pleasure working with Fon
during this course
to which she has brought so much.
